In 1990, at
the suggestion of round dance leader Tom Newby, Jerry took a cuers course
offered by the Toronto and District Square and Round Dance Association and soon
established the first of his clubs - Shamrock Rounds. Jerry and Bonnie have
taught rounds for the Oakville Square Dance Club and Royal City Squares in
Guelph. In 2004 they were asked to take over the Melody Rounds Dance Club in
Burlington where they taught Phase 4, 5 and 6 until it closed in 2019. From
2008 until 2018, they were leaders of London Harmony Rounds, teaching Phase 3,
4 and 5.
Jerry and
Bonnie have also taught and cued rounds at numerous special dances, weekend
camporees, festivals and Conventions in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick,
Michigan and New York. They have taught and cued at over 20 Conventions.
Jerry and
Bonnie also contributed to the round dance movement by acting as Round Dance
Programmers for the annual Toronto and District Square and Round Dance
International Convention at the University of Guelph and for the Western
Ontario Weekend held each June in London. They served as Round Dance Programmers for
the 2008 and 2018 Canadian National Square and Round Dance Conventions hosted
by SWOSDA.
They have
served on the executive of the Toronto and District Square and Round Dance
Association where they held the positions of Vice President, Round Dance Chair
and Convention Registrar. Jerry created and was webmaster for the popular
T&D Website.
Since 1990,
they have choreographed over twenty five dances at the Phase 2, 3, 4, and 5
levels. Jerry was one of the first local cuers to use digital music on his
computer for clubs and cueing events, and as Round Dance Programmer, he
initiated cue sheet CD's to be included with Convention Syllabi.
Jerry brings
over 30 years of teaching experience to his hobby. He is a retired high school
math and science teacher and holds Bachelors and Masters
degrees in Engineering from the University of Guelph.
Bonnie, a former Archivist and Museum Director, is now retired from the
Wellington County Museum and Archives and holds a Bachelor Degree in History
from the University of Waterloo and a Masters Degree
from the University of Guelph. In their spare time, they still enjoy dancing.
Jerry's other hobbies include gardening and computers. Bonnie, a former cub
leader, enjoys reading novels and collecting Depression Glass
and British royalty memorabilia.
